[comp.sys.mac.comm] Several System 7 questions for the wise among us

ddl683@sarah.albany.edu (Cinderella Man) (05/21/91)

Q.#1: PS printing:
I upload PostScript output to a DEC LPS40 (hooked to a VAX
8650/VMS). With previous printer drivers, I would use LaserFix 2.0 to
dump it to disk, and then FTP or upload it. Under System 7's
LaserWriter driver, there is a radio button that toggles the
save-to-disk process. Only, it creates much, much larger files -- I
assume it's creating TrueType images, much like it does with
downloadable PS fonts. Even with a font such as Souvenir, where I
have ONLY the bitmap on the Mac, it creates larger files, apparently
imaging the bitmap! (As opposed to just relaying the font name in the
PS code.) Is there any way to override this? Will downgrading to an
older LaserWriter driver and using LaserFix work? --

Q.#2: DEC/Mac networking:
I have DEC PathWORKS (by the way, VMS volume sharing under
Sys7 works fine). What do I need to do to get the Comm Toolbox
working? For example, if I boot MacX off the VMS container mounted on
the desktop, it will load and then return the error, "The Comm Toolbox
could not be initialized because there are no connection tools
installed." I've put the Communications Folder in my new System
Folder, but I've avoided returning the comm INITs (ADSP, etc) because
I'm not sure what's redundant under System 7. Which are still
  necessary?

(By the way, what steps do I and my VAX sysadmin need to take, to
get the LPS40 to show up as a networked printer to my ethernetted Mac,
assuming no other communications problems between the two platforms?)
--

Q.#3: Startup items:
I recall reading that the Startup Items folder could be used
to play startupsounds and show startupscreens, as well as replacing
the old Set Startup command. Is this true, or misinformation? I've
  tried it with no success.

---------

I've had one crash, in ResEdit, diddling with icons (what
else?). I clicked on the pencil tool and it froze. I didn't remember
to try the emergency application exit trick.

This has been the SMOOTHEST Mac system installation I've gone
through in seven years, especially when considering the many changes.
I have yet to run into an incompatability (although admittedly I've
been playing it safe so far, keeping VM off and staying in 24-bit
mode). I've had none of the problems others have mentioned: opening
older System files, using MacTCP, making a trashcan alias, etc, all
seem to work fine.

System 7 is ... well, bitchin' cool.

Setup, for those keeping box scores:
Mac IIci
8MB physical RAM
80MB Quantum internal HD
Apple CD-ROM player (running the new s/w)
Ehman (Syquest 555) SCSI 45MB removable cart. HD
ethernet NB card

Extensions:
Apple CD-ROM/CD Remote
SuperClock
WindowShade
SoundMaster
InterCaps (HarDeeHarHar)
MacTCP
MacEnvy

				thanks!

Communications Tools belong in the Extensions folder.

By the way, do NOT install PathWorks 1.0 on top of System 7.0. The
proper procedure is to install PathWorks on top of SYstem 6.0.x, THEN
upgrade to System 7.0.

Not to dump on you Byron, but how come everybody wants to know what things
go in which folder.....all you have to do it drop the
Extension/INIT/CDEV/FONT/DA on top of the System Folder itself, and the
System will put it in the correct folder all by itself.

Connection, Terminal, and File Transfer Tools are also "auto-routed" when you
drop them on top of the System Folder.

Also the 7.0 Installer will automatically move communications tools from the
Communications Folder into the new Extensions folder when you are installing
system 7.0.

hope this helps.

All of the tools which used to go into the Communications Folder under System
6.x need to be moved to the Extensions Folder under System 7.0. ADSP is
included in System 7.0. TCP/IP is not.

The sounds must be double-clickable. Basically the rule is: If you can
double-click the file in the finder and have it work, it will work in the
Startup Items folder.
