[comp.sys.mac.comm] MacTCP+MacPlus+System7=Yuck

dorner@pequod.cso.uiuc.edu (Steve Dorner) (05/31/91)

The players:

1 TOTALLY CLEAN System 7 external hard drive. No INITs except MacTCP 1.0.1. Installed on the Plus using the "Easy Install" option from the Sys7 CD.

1 Moderately clean System 6 external hard drive, with MacTCP 1.0.1
(Both drives are identical hardware & disk drivers.)

1 SE/30 (5M), hooked to PhoneNet w/gatorbox

1 MacPlus (4M), hooked to same

The results:

System 7 Hard Drive	|	System 6 Hard Drive
--------+-------------------------------+----------------------------
MacPlus	| sucks rocks* | works fine
--------+-------------------------------+----------------------------
SE/30	| works fine | works fine
--------+-------------------------------+----------------------------

*Eudora and NCSA Telnet mostly work, but with *frequent*, *long* pauses.
Connections sometimes die of sheer boredom. FileSharing seems to work
just fine (turning it off does NOT affect the problem, nor does the
AppleTalk 52 INIT.) The mac as a whole works fine (well, I won't say
it's made me a believer in System 7, but it works).

Is anybody else having a problem with MacTCP 1.0.1, a MacPlus, and System 7?
Is anybody NOT having a problem with this configuration?

If nobody can shed any light on this, I guess I'll have to wheedle somebody
into helping me with a LANalyzer...
