[comp.sys.mac.comm] Option as Ctrl in System 7, comm programs

hellerst@hellerst.almaden.ibm.com (Joseph Hellerstein) (05/31/91)

I've found in using system 7 on my Mac+ that various comm programs which
used to allow me to use the option key as my control key no longer can do so.
Anybody know a way around this? Or at least an explanation of the change in
behavior?

I had the same problem, and it really urked me, so in desperation, I moved the
kCHR resource from zterm into the system, and selected it using the keyboard
cdev...BOOM! Control keys again! (Don't ask me, I just work here...;)

I saw it in a note later that system 7 no longer allows kCHR resources in
programs to affect the system. They must be copied into the system file.
Someone mentioned why this is a good idea in a much previous post, (I hope this
is right):
The engineers at Apple were afraid that some program would go around defining
these kCHR resources for use by the system, and when the program quit, the
pointer to the kCHR would still pont to something, but the kCHR wouldn't be
there...(something like that) Anyone want to clear this one up?

Anyway, try it out, and you'll like it!
