[comp.sys.mac.comm] some general questions of an introductory nature

I'm thinking of entering the world of Macintosh telecommunications, and I
have a few questions I could use answers to.

1.  I don't have a modem, but a co-worker is very enthusiastic about the
    SupraModem.  What are some people's experiences (good and bad) with this
    modem?  Are there any other inexpensive modems that people have had 
    good experiences with?

2.  What about software?  I've heard a lot about protocols and the like but
    I don't know anything about them.  How much of the terminology do I
    need to know?

Hmm...  Hardware and software, I guess that about covers it.
