Here are edited versions of the replies I received and those that were posted to the net. It seems that this is possible with currently available software and/or hardware. However, I was after a cheaper solution - something like a comm toolbox tool that supports Appletalk over a modem. The closest to my prefered solution is Timbuktu Remote. Thanks to those who replied. T. ========== From ajauch@Bonnie.ICS.UCI.EDU Fri Jun 7 13:53 EDT 1991 Subject: Re: System 7.0 file sharing via modem ? There are about two thousand ways to solve this problem. Here are my two suggestions: 1) Get Dayna's DaynaPort (I think this is the product) or some product that allows you to bridge AppleTalk networks via modems. What you can then do is dial in to the "Network" (consisting of your 7.0 mac and the Dayna box) with a remote computer. You can then use the shared files on the 7.0 mac like you where on one network. BTW, the remote machine does not have to be 7.0, any version of AppleShare will work. 2) Get Timbuktu Remote (two copies). With this, you don't need system 7.0. You can simply dial up the remote mac and USE it. Like you where there. It also supports file sharing. I would probably suggest number two unless you have a network on one end you want to use (other than the one mac in question). Timbuktu works great, but you might want a 9600 baud modem if you are going to be doing anything with medium to large files. Let me know if this is too confused for you to understand. ----------- From HUFF@MCCLB0.MED.NYU.EDU Sat Jun 8 06:10 EDT 1991 Phone Net Liaison works under 6.0.7, I haven't tried it under system 7 yet. You need one copy for each "host", but free "LiaisonNet" for each "client" (dial in) system. I don't have the compatibility report at hand. ------------ From: weiss@babbage.seas.ucla.edu (Michael Weiss) Subject: Re: System 7.0 file sharing via modem ? Seeing as how this has been asked by more than one person, I'm responding in a post. I would assume that the only way to properly do this would be by using Liaison on the two machines. However, I have not heard anything in the way of Sys7 compatibility with Liaison...you may have to contact Farallon to find this out. -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- + University of Waterloo | atschnei@vlsi.waterloo.edu + + Department of Electrical Engineering | atschnei@vlsi.uwaterloo.ca + + VLSI Group | Office:(519)885-1211 x3896 +
