[net.railroad] Train from SF area to Grand Canyon?

maryann@t12tst.UUCP (Maryann Kennedy) (11/14/85)

My husband and I have recently become avid train fans, having taken
a few train rides in the California area, i.e. Willits-Eureka and back.
Now we are wondering what else is available. Does anyone know of any
other good train trips in the California area? We are planning a trip
to the Grand Canyon in early May. I have not gotten around to call
Amtrak yet, but am wondering if they go from somewhere in the San Jose
or San Francisco area (actually we live in Sunnyvale) directly to the
Grand Canyon. Any idea on price? Are there connecting buses if the
train lets off somewhere nearby? Thanks for info.

To go to Grand Canyon from San Jose you have to take the Coast Starlight
from San Jose to LA, and then change there to the Southwest Chief. The
Southwest Chief takes you to Flagstaff, from where you take a bus to Grand
Canyon. I understand Amtrak has several package tours to Grand Canyon.
However, I have no idea what they cost.

Incidentally, if you haven't already travelled from San Jose to LA by the
Coast Starlight, you may consider doing just that. It is one of the most
scenic train rides that I have been on.
