[comp.sys.mac.comm] The News-How to Post?

derosa@motcid.UUCP (John DeRosa) (06/14/91)

How do you post a new article in "TheNews"?

It would appear that you cannot post to a
group that has no mail. That is, the
"post new" menu item is greyed out unless
you are inside the group.

Also, how can you read old (already read)
articles? The "unread" command is greyed
out unless you are in the group.

Solving that problem would solve (sort of) the
first problem.

You have to be in the group in order to post a new message, but you can go into
the group even if there is no new mail in it. Just double-click on the group
name, and a window will come up to show you all the headers of new articles.
Now, that window *will* be empty since there are no new articles, but at that
point you just select "Post New..." from the menu.

The second question is a bit trickier. I haven't read the manual for TheNews
yet, but I think the only way you can do that is to change your preferences
settings. Turn off the "only show unread articles" option, click "Okay"
(instead of "Save"), and then double-click on the group you want to see.
You'll get the headers for all articles which are in that group.

Hmm, I guess the first one might require a preferences change too, depending on
how your preferences are set. If you have the "only show groups with unread
articles" preference on, you'll have to turn that off and re-open your
newsgroup file. Then the newsgroup will be listed even though it has no new
articles.

I always run with that option off, though.

When you are in the groups window, command+d followed by command+a also works
