[comp.sys.mac.comm] Any uupc 2.x users out there?

dplatt@snulbug.mtview.ca.us (Dave Platt) (06/13/91)

I've been working on some enhancements for uupc, one of the two freeware
uucp communications packages for the Macintosh. I'll probably post the
new version to the usual archives in a few weeks, but before I do I'd
like to have some other user(s) of uupc beta-test the new version on
their machines. If you use uupc 2.0 or 2.1, and are interested in the
changes noted below, please drop me a note:

Version 2.1c has the following enhancements: it will run in the
background under MultiFinder or on System 7; its HAYES dialer supports
high-speed modems, and hangs up immediately if it receives a "BUSY" or
"NO CARRIER" responses; it has a built-in dialer for Racal-Vadic VS212
modems; it allows the specification of more than one phone number per
neighboring site; it can accept inbound mail with domain-style
addresses; its protocol engine has some additional error checking and
status messages and handles certain abnormal conditions more gracefully
than before.

Mail to you failed this time around Dave so...

Yes I'm very interested in the new UUPC enhancements. I use UUPC 2.1
but have always had problems talking to Telebit T2500's at speeds
greater than 2400 bps. Now this might be (and probably is) the fault
of the T2500. Nevertheless your fixes for high speed stuff might
help.

Yup.... me intersted.

You may like to consider using a package called uAccess from ICE Engineering.
I am running it under my Mac Plus with a Prometheus V32 9600 (not
9600M Plus). It is running great without any major problem. The
modem talks to telebit T2500.

The uAccess Manual also has parameter settings for the Telebit 2500.

Good luck

Once upon a time, (October 20, 1990) time@ice.com said:

Are there still any plans to produce this "limited-budget" version of
uAccess? What is the current "street" price of uAccess?

I can't grok the price ($300?) of uAccess, not when I can get
excellent software like C News, IDA sendmail, and nntplink on a unix
system for *zip*. Frankly, I doubt that the news system in uAccess can
compare to C News. To contrast uAccess, with uupc 2.1 and Fernmail I
have a decent email system on my mac for $20.

I understand that uAccess does more than news. I have a file someone
mailed me with all the features spelled out. It sounds like a very
nice package. It's just too expensive for me. I'd rather buy a used
unix-pc for $300 and put C News on it (probably will).

It seems there is a different ethic in the mac world when it comes to
news software.

Just my $2*10^(-02).
