[comp.sys.mac.comm] Which Ethernet card to choose?

badr@cs.washington.edu (Badr H. Al-Badr) (06/18/91)

I have a Mac IIci that I want to connect to an Ethernet. I would
appreciate any information on which card to choose.

I have those specific questions those as well:

1- which is the best Ethernet card overall? Somebody recommended Mac con II
by Asente, is it good (it is expensive $379)?

2- How about the Ethernet cards newly announced by Apple anybody knows how
good are they, How much they will cost, when will they be available?

3- In the July issue on MacWorld, they talk about a new Ethernet card
from sonic systems that costs only $199, any info on that?

4- Were there any Ethernet card evaluations in back issues of MacWorld or
Mac User?

Thanks a lot For your help.

Badr

I'm evaluating the card for a mac II. It seems to work really well. I haven't
stress tested it yet. (How do you stress test a Ethernet card?)

You can't beat that price. I'll let you know more as I find out.

Believe you me, we have ways :-) :-) :-)

In an upcoming issue we will be publishing a Lab Report that compares
all 10BASE-T cards available at time of testing.

The important question to ask is: Which type of Ethernet cableing
do you have? Thich (coaxle), Thin, or 10Base T (Twisted Pair). This
will allow you to narrow the field a little in terms of which cards are
available.

Yes there is a complete section in the June 1990 issue of MacUser
called "300 Best Networking Products". It goes into quite a good deal
of depth concerning Ethernet cards, connectors, and routers, along with
Local Talk, and probably everything else you ever wanted to know about
setting up a Mac network of any size.
