Thanks to everyone who responded. Dispite the fact that Emacs felt the original request was important enough to send out twice, :-) I'll summarize only once (I hope). Eleven helpful folks out there either wrote back or posted, here is what they had to say: Commercial: =========== VersaTerm: 4 people were using VersaTerm or VersaTerm pro and were VERY happy with it. It seems to have all the functionality I need. It's available from: Synergy Software 2457 Perkiomen Ave. Reading, PA 19606 (215) 779-0522 It may or may not be available from software houses (disagreement here), but costs 80 or 90 dollars. White Night: VT240: one vote each, they seemed happy with them MacTerminal: nobody advocated it, but I don't know why. It must either be expensize or obsolete. FTPable: free or cheap ====================== MacLayers: 4 people recommended MacLayers. I downloaded it from "sumex-aim.stanford.edu" and have been using it. It is similar to UW (which I haven't tried yet) in that you can have multiple virtual windows to the same machine with help from Unix servers. It also lets you download while typing in another window. Unfortunately, it's file transfer is rather primitive, only allowing downloads, and it doesn't have a "spiffy little popup window" (TM). Its emulation is very good, and runs Emacs fine (so far). You can change the size of the screen as well as the font (to 4 or 5 different ones). UW: 2 folks mentioned UW, which I haven't tried yet. It's an older program, but I don't know how recent the latest updates are. It is apparently similar to MacLayers. Zterm: nobody said anything about it. Comments: ========= For the time being, I'm going to stick with MacLayers and rely on Zterm for file transfers. If we could just get Werner Uhrig (MacLayers) together with the author of Zterm (for the file transfer), we'd really have something. The consensus seems to be to get VersaTerm if you want to spend some money. Thanks everyone for the use of your bandwidth, I'll now fade back into eaves-dropping mode. >Zterm: > nobody said anything about it. -- Im using Zterm now to talk to a unix machine through a VAX/VMS machine. I only use Zterm because its the best VT100 emulation. It does NOT do emacs that well, I have a Mac Classic and one of those 'new' keyboards. The cursor keys do not work, It's areal pain typing c-b or c-f etc etc to move around the screen. Thats my only complaint about Zterm emacs emulation. (And im not sure if its program or the keyboard mainly because at university we have mac LC's with the same keyboard when connecting over a appletalk network using mac IP4.0 the program does not handle the keys well, IE to cut you press cmd-,) Cheers, Paul.

>I only use Zterm because its the best VT100 emulation. >.... The cursor keys do not work This seems like a contradiction to me... Ok so I didn't make myself too clear, What I meant was I couldnt get the cursor keys to work under EMACS, which was the original posting. I have no problems using the cursor keys in VMS, or a BBS which also has VT100 emulation. Cheers, Paul.
