For some reason, I seem to recall seeing that there was some sort of a ROM disk in the Classic which allows it to be an essentially diskless appleshare client. Have I lost it, or is this indeed true... Thanks.. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: David Dmytryshyn EMAIL: djd@scgrp.UUCP SC Group, Toronto, Canada uunet!utai!lsuc!scgrp!djd ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Ok to boot your mac classic with the rom disk, take all the disks out
of the drives, and hold down cmd-option-x-o then wait 3-5 seconds. It is a
rather empty system (6.0.3) taking up about 350k It does have appleshare. IF
you want to boot evertime use the control pannel and set the start up to rom
disk.
Cheers, Paul

Have I lost it, or is this indeed true... Yup, you can do it. There is a "minimal" System (6.0.something...is it 6.0.7?) in the 512K ROM. To get to it, you need to hold down Command-Option-X-O at startup (or is that Command-Shift-X-O??? It's one of the two). In fact, for that very reason, the Classic was codenamed the XO (at least that's what MacLeak called it). -- \ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | / - Michael weiss@seas.ucla.edu | School of Engineering & Applied Science - - Weiss izzydp5@oac.ucla.edu | University of California, Los Angeles - / | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | \

Have I lost it, or is this indeed true... After turning your Classic on, hold down Command-Option-X-O until you get to the Finder. You'lll get an icon on the desktop for you ROM disk. This contains just enough information for a Classic to boot. Go into the Control Panel and set the ROM disk as the startup disk, and use the Chooser to mount your Appleshare volume. Now, when you restart, you won't have to hold the keys down, it will automatically boot off the ROM drive and mount the fileserver volume. It works fine, except when you have applications that like to write to the System Folder. Around here, we opt for just booting off a floppy so we can load a couple of inits on. But if you don't use any inits or cdevs, it's a good option. BTW, the ROM disk contains 6.0.7...

You're right, it's 6.0.3. I spaced and was thinking the Classic required 6.0.7... Sorry 'bout that.
