[comp.sys.mac.games] Might and Magic II: A warning and a gripe

dresnick@athena.mit.edu (David I Resnick) (06/10/90)

I just located M&M II for the Mac at my local computer store and was
quite disgruntled to discover the following.

I have a IIci, and since the store did too I figured I'd test that it
worked before I bought it. We copied it onto the hard disk as per
instructions, and tried to execute it. Wouldn't run: got error -199.
Tried it on an SE/30 - same deal. Broke open a different copy of the
game - no dice. Tried the usual routine - kill all inits, boot up
under the uniFinder - still no joy. Tried running it off of the
master disks - didn't work. Finally dug through the box and discovered
a leaflet saying roughly the following:

You too can get the 256 color version of Might and Magic II. Just
send - get this - $19.95 to New World Computers....

I find this approach HIGHLY offensive. It says on the box that it
runs on Macintosh with 1MB and system 6.0x. It does not say that you
have to pay an additional amount to get a working version for your
Macintosh II system (and presumably for the SE/30 as well, since
neither copy worked on the store's SE/30). I think that it would be
irritating for them to include a version that works only in black and
white and then ask for you to pay for an upgrade, but it is
infuriating for them to make you pay more for a version that works at
all.

I decided not to buy the game after all - if I hear reviews saying
that it is the best thing since sliced bread then I might change my
mind, however until then I will keep my money...
