[comp.sys.mac.games] Spoilers wanted for The Fool's Errand

avoncampe@milkwy.enet.dec.com (Alfred von Campe) (06/14/90)

I've come to the end of my wits. I am stuck with 6 pieces missing and can't
go on. The unsolved puzzles (other than the Sun's Map) are "The Stone Wall"
and "The High Priestess". The unavailable (greyed out) puzzles are "The
Watchtower", "The Sentry", "The Boat", "Despair", and "The Dead Warrior."
Please help me, especially with "The Stone Wall", since I suspect that if I
solve it, I can solve the others.

Thanks for any help,
Alfred

Stone Wall? I'll gladly help you out with it!

The "High Priestess" is mainly an endurance test. It's pretty
straightforward, but it does take a while, and getting through it is kind
of fun...

You're at Witt's End. Passages lead off in all directions.

Don't worry about the Sun's Map. "Fool" around a bit more, and solve the
Map last.

The stone wall, I believe, has three vines growing out of the ground on
the right and a castle wall on the left. Is this the one? If so, you need
to form two three-letter words in the given blanks. Each word refers to
a component of the image, and each letter of the word must be chosen from
the list of letters growing out of the vine immediately above the letter-blank.

The word on the left is easy: who guards the wall? The word on the right is
more difficult, because it is a synonym. Ask yourself, who chooses the letters?

> and "The High Priestess".

One thing you might not realize about the High Priestess is that you can
hit the incorrect numbers ... they just won't vanish. Therefore, if you hit
the mouse in the same place a gadzillion times, you'll eventually click on
each # in the proper order. Notice, also, that when you click the mouse the
screen freezes for a moment, making it a bit easier to read. The next # you
need to click is always on top of the other tiles, and moves a bit slower
than them.

May the Sun shine on the back of your neck, and not on the sweat of your
brow.

It's been a long while since I solved it, but if the stone wall is the
one with two three letter words, the the answer is RAT IVY; if not
please describe the accompanying screen.

Loki (mldemsey@caslon.cs.arizona.edu)
".. you got a fancy car, and fancy clothes; you got fancy things, going up
your nose. You're getting fancy gifts, from expensive men; you're a dog
on a leash, like a pig in a pen..."

The high priestess can only be completed after all the keys of
Thoth have been captured. Hint: just remember the puzzle solutions
of the key puzzles.

The interesting part is how well this game is modeled around
the Book of Thoth written by Aleister Crowley about the Egyptian Tarot.
(Thoth, for those who don't, was the scribe to the Egyptian Gods..)...
anyway that's another story..

Has anyone played the other game done by the same guy? "At the Carnival"
Very well done. Less mythical, but it's in color on the II's...

Loki

Well, I'm stuck again. I figured out The Stone Wall; the hint about taking
one letter from each vine over the empty letter box was all I needed. I had
already guessed RAT, I just had problems with the second word (IVY) which
was not that intuitive.

The High Priestess still has me stumped. Apart from The Sun, it is the
only puzzle that is available (i.e., not greyed out) that is unsolved. But
I only have three keys: the second one (from The Humbug puzzle), the third
one (from the Justice puzzle) and the last one (from The Hermit). So I guess
I need to get the first one, but there are no unsolved puzzles from which to
get it. I have gotten past a few steps of The High Priestess already: the
numbers, the tracing of the outline, and I think another one, but I'm not sure.
It's been a while since I did it. When I get into it now, I have a whole
bunch of "video noise" on the screen. There are some "hidden" squares, which
I've hit in some order to move onto the next phase, but it's still more noise.
Arrrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!! Please help me; I don't want to be a Fool anymore!

Never mind my last posting (if it ever makes it out; I still haven't seen it
on my local machine and it's been over half an hour). It (the last posting,
that is) described how I was still having problems with The High Priestess,
but I've managed to solve it!!! And the Sun's Map is complete too. Now I
just have to complete the book of Toth. Unfortunately, it'll have to wait
until tomorrow (later today, actually) since I have to get up early and go
to work :-(. Thanks for all your help!

I disagree. I think that "Puzzle Gallery" (I think that's the name)
is at best a weak effort. After Fool's Errand, I expected something
with some overall structure and diverse parts. Puzzle Gallery has
neither. I sure hope he comes out with another game with some
atmosphere -- it doesn't need to be mystical, just interseting, with
something to keep the interest level high.
