Another, more respectable, Theldrow question.... Can anyone offer specific hints of strategy regarding Theldrow, specifically: 1. The optimal mix of STR, INT, CON, CHR, WIS and DEX? 2. Which god is the most useful to be allied with? - and why? - and how to stay in good graces? 3. How good is the dagger you start with? 4. Should you get another weapon? 5. Relative advantages/disavantages of weapons? 6. What sort of armor to wear? 7. Shield or no shield? 8. Useful potions? (They're expensive!) 9. Haggling strategies? 10. How to ask questions at the bar? 11. How often to fight/retreat? 12. How much to rely on magic in combat? 13. The ever popular....anything else that I've missed. Regarding your questions on Theldrow: I haven't gotten that far. I've found Harkyn's castle, the candle, the bell, and the skull, and wandered around the underground caverns; try as I might, I can't find the hermit or the magic shop. I could give you a few pointers that kept me from dying early in the game, however. 1) I find more CON, DEX, and CHR are good to start out with. I wouldn't put much in INT and WIS. 2) Beraku, since he's the god of the closest town. I haven't been able to find other gods yet. 3) The dagger's fine, until you've defeated the spiders in the forest. You'll find a scimitar there. 4) I find the scimitar's sufficient. Later in the game, you'll rely mostly on magic and prayers anyway. 5) Armor? Nope, I don't use any. They don't protect you sufficiently to justify the cost. Save the money for the Traveler's Inn. 6) No shields required. 7) The only one I've used is Cure. You might need a cure potion in case a monster poisons you (before you reach cure prayer level). 8) If you're CHR's high, you can barter with the shopkeeper until he becomes insulted; then barter with him again for the cut-off price. The top price for daggers are 4 gold pieces. 9) Don't bother with the barkeep until you've got plenty of jewels. He'll talk with just 5 gold pieces. 10) Before reaching Fireball magic level, retreat when you meet giant ants. They're really nasty to deal with. Another nasty monster is the stalker. Giant rats are easy to fight. 11) Magic, prayer, yep. You'll find you'll use fireball, power, heal, and magic missles a lot. 12) Good starting strategies: Run to the town ASAP. Inside, you can duck into the temple and rest up (lower your fatigue) by continually praying (helps good standing with Beraku to boot). If you're lucky, you can avoid most giant ant hordes. Don't go into the inn the first time a "It's been a long day" message pops up. Keep fighting/praying. Wait until the fourth or fifth message to go into the inn. You'll need plenty of money just for the inn. On the second or third day, run to the cemetary and let Beraku Turn Undead the undead monsters. You'll get experience plus some undead bone reagents. Once you know fireball, go and tackle giant spiders. After the fourth day, you should be able to wander around the underground caverns. Try to find some creepers, they'll probably leave you some Jewels ($$$). -=/\=- Peter Lien plien@encore.com uunet!encore.com!plien plien@encore.UUCP

pl> try as I might, I can't find pl> the hermit or the magic shop. SPOILER FOLLOWS!! You may find these guys in the lost woods. Go across the river, make a right and go till it dead ends. Make a left so that you're looking at a wall of trees. Then go forward and you're in the lost woods! The hermit will now be behind you, and the Bazarre round a few right turns ahead of you. I'll let you figure out how to get back. Thank you for your hints, I am quite pleased to return the favor. > Can anyone offer specific hints of strategy regarding Theldrow, > specifically: > 1. The optimal mix of STR, INT, CON, CHR, WIS and DEX? > 2. Which god is the most useful to be allied with? Well.. I have personally been VERY frustrated with Theldrow. I don't know whats wrong but it seems as if the game has a VERY high rating when it comes to level of play. I usually start out with the God of Thievery (I think it's Berabaku) and I go and steal my weapons etc. A question is that I have to find an easy dungeon to start my character off with. He's always getting killed. I go down into the dungeon under the city and can never get back up alive because I keep getting attacked by these Ratmen that conjure more Rats..Very frustrating. Do you have any hints by chance? -- Uucp: ...{gatech,ames,rutgers}!ncar!asuvax!stjhmc!14!Ed.Lin Internet: Ed.Lin@f14.n114.z1.fidonet.org

Hmm... I've played the game, and while I agree with most of what's been said about the order the upstairs stuff should be done, I disagree about the downstairs. In the underground caverns, the first place you want to go (from the grain room) is out, left, then *right*. This gets you to a room with an ogre - he's easy to kill, and has fifty gold. Enough to allow you to rest up a couple nights. (Oh yeah - the inn gets more expensive as you get more experienced.) Then go beyond him to the ratmen - kill the ratmen first (you can choose which monster to attack) so they'll stop summoning giant rats. Then there's an owlbear - he's tough, but he guards a chest with eight gems, three potions, and a special piece of the main puzzle of the game. Hope this helps. It's a fun game. I did all of the first version except the final puzzle (I *still* want to know just how that works... Anyone with hints, please e-mail.) Now that the new version is out (and old characters aren't compatible... grrr...), I guess it's time to work on it for another several days... :) -- Draphsor vo'drun-Aelf draphsor@portia.stanford.edu
