[comp.sys.mac.games] Is Gauntlet Worth it?

mjv@brownvm.brown.edu (Marshall Vale) (08/25/90)

I am a major Gaunltet junking and am wondering how good a conversion
Gauntlet for the Mac is.
 - Does it work in color?
 - is it copy protected?
 - Are the levels accurate?
 - All the monsters and characters there?
 - How true a conversion is it?

Thanks in advance! (E-mail is preferred)

It's a good game, not copy protected, *BUT* it does not work on a Mac IIfx,
and according to the project manager, never will. Boo.

This is possibly the worst port ever for a Macintosh distribution. Instead of the standard user definable keys, it gives you multiple choices of the same really, obtuse keyboard arrangements. If it were not for the PD Gauntlet editor, the game would have no initial variations. The game moves unbelievably slow on a MacPlus and does not take advantage of the color of the MacII. Finally, but most importantly, the game play is nothing like the excitement of playing the arcade version (which I loved as a k

id). I've played the Atari ST version and it also was bad, except the colors were there. If you want D&D action, buy Pool of Radiance: you get the adventuring feel and the miniatures/arcade combat look.

Gaunlet _does_ have color on the macII family. When you _buy_ the program,
it comes with two disks. One contains a color version and the other a B&W.
The color version runs quite well on large monitors as well as the "normal"
macII mons. I believe that it only uses 16 colors, but I can't remember.
Nevertheless, given the rather scarce offering of color games available at
this time, I think Gauntlet is a winner.

Anyone know if it works on a IIci? Probably not if it works on a IIfx. That
would be a shame; I was about to buy it.

I used to play it on my ci. So it worked for me! It's quite a good game. The
games which didn't work were from Sierra.

Another arcade game which is very nice is Super Hang On. There's also a neat
game called Leprechaun, and of course Shanghai(these aren't arcade games).

Well, it sure had color on my old Mac II...

I have played it on my Mac IIci but I seem to recall some bug that took some
of the fun out of it (cannot remeber quite what it was).
