[net.railroad] Third rail and overhead

alcock@csse32.DEC (Bruce G. Alcock) (01/09/86)

The old New Haven line that runs into GCT (Grand Central Terminal) uses
third rail while on what was once New York Central tracks, and switches
to catenary in the Bronx. This service is now Connecticut DOT, and
uses m.u. cars only. Amtrak does not run into GCT from Boston, so their
electics only require a pantagraph - in pre-Amtrak days, the New Haven
equiped all of their passenger electics with both pantagraph and third
rail shoes, as well as all of their m.u. cars.

By the way - are there any New York Central fans out there? I'm looking
for pictures and prints of NYC roundhouses, and plans for engine servicing
facilities.
