The old New Haven line that runs into GCT (Grand Central Terminal) uses third rail while on what was once New York Central tracks, and switches to catenary in the Bronx. This service is now Connecticut DOT, and uses m.u. cars only. Amtrak does not run into GCT from Boston, so their electics only require a pantagraph - in pre-Amtrak days, the New Haven equiped all of their passenger electics with both pantagraph and third rail shoes, as well as all of their m.u. cars. By the way - are there any New York Central fans out there? I'm looking for pictures and prints of NYC roundhouses, and plans for engine servicing facilities. bruce alcock
