Well, after one heck of a search of local BBS systems, I finally
found something which may pacify all of you who have been looking
for a "non-commercial" chess game for the Mac.
It's called NetChess, and while it's primarily for AppleTalk network
use, it comes with a special configuration file which supposedly
lets you play the game without a network hookup.
Two warnings:
1. It's shareware, not freeware. Sorry, this was all I could find.
(I am still looking.)
2. Since I don't know the game of chess, I can't say how well the
game works overall. (I got it only because others have asked
for it.)
In about two minutes I'm going to shuttle a copy off to the sumex/
INFO-MAC archives, so you'll all be able to get it.
Hope this helps,
