I am having some trouble getting through the mass attacks in the throne room of the kobold cave. I can fight the party through two waves but the third group of kobolds/trolls/nasties wipes out the party. In my opinion, the party is reasonably balanced (two fighters, a fighter/MU, a thief, a MU, and a cleric), experienced (all characters are 5th or 6th level), and well equipped (everybody has magic weapons, scrolls, potions, etc.). As for tactics, first I try to sleep the kobolds in the front row engaging the fighters. This prevents the fighters from suffering minor damage from the kobolds and prevents too many trolls from attacking the party. The MUs fireball the main body of kobolds (especially the archers). Then the party concentrates on the big monsters. This works well enough for the first two waves but the party takes too much damage to survive the third attack wave. So my questions are: - How many wave attacks are there? - What tactics are best? - Is my party strong enough to win? Do I need to pick up some NPCs? Thanks in advance! I think your party should do just fine. Make sure the fighters have the best possible ACs given the pooled equipment of the party. I generally have the mages cast Stinking Cloud on the trolls and after that, Sleep on the kobolds. Stinking Cloud has to be the best spell for taking on the higher level monsters. The computer's algorithm for fighting stinks, so NPCs are only barely useful. A Hero or two can be useful in tougher fights. On the other hand, they can sometimes get in the way. I usually run two fighters, a mage/thief, and the rest cleric/fighters or cleric/fighter/mages. Given that level advancement is halted early for clerics and mages, experience beyond the table is wasted. The extra Sleep and Cure spells also come in handy.

[deletions] I agree with Allen's assessments. In addition you should keep your group together and lay down a barrier of stinking clouds around you as much as possible. This should be down after you fireball the main group as you mentioned. Another thing you might be neglecting to do is to HEAL before the last battle. How do you do that? After the 2nd battle, answer *yes* to the message which asks if you want to continue the battle, then you can simply heal your characters with either potions or with magic (touch only remember!), *then* answer no to the "continue battle?" question. Don't take too long!--those stupid trolls don't stay down forever! This whole battle sequence is tough. I think I finally did it after 3-4 tries and even then I had one or two dead characters to go resurrect. Good luck! S.
