[comp.sys.mac.games] Falcon 2.21 - Released November 1st!

jcoper@ccu.umanitoba.ca (D. Joseph Creighton) (11/19/90)

I just received my update from Spectrum Holobyte early last week, and I
must say that the people there are quite helpful! I placed a Post-It (tm)
note on my second disk asking what the next planned version would be and
when was the projected release date. When my new disk returned, they had
jotted on the computerized receipt: THIS WAS JUST RELEASED LAST WEEK!

As to the game itself: Incredible! Outstanding! A masterpiece of work!
According to the 2.2 Addendum, these are some of the changes:
	- they have downgraded Major's rank to not include weight and
drag effects, making it much easier to fly at that level (this
is definately an asset, since trying to outmaneuver SAMs with
a pair of 2000 lb-ers under your wings ain't fun!)
	- mid-air collisions are now possible (I've also noticed that in
a head-to-head match up, the MiG almost always wins out. Now
	  I've got to change tactics!)
	- you can land *with* damage, whereas in some previous versions
landing with *any* damage - even something slight - would cause
you to crash (I always wondered why I would crash when coming
down the glide slope at a picture-perfect attitude...)

Overall, Falcon is the *hottest* simulation, IMO, and getting hotter!
If you don't have an update to this version, I strongly recommend doing so.

Oh, BTW, Compute! Books is selling a book called "Turn and Burn - The
Authorative Guide to Falcon" which is a great companion to the manual. It
does indeed begin where the manual leaves off. There are detailed
suggestions to flight plans for each mission and hints on finishing your
objective, as well as revealed hidden secrets and comments throughout from
a real F-16 driver, "Viper." (the best "hidden secret" no longer works on
V.2.21, but did on V.2.0 If you have 2.0 - or even if you don't - and you
want a few days of unlimited power before your update arrives, drop me a
line and I'll let you in on the secret... ;)

How about just posting what it is? You could use one of those spoiler
dealies, a ^ in the 1st column and a L in the second column (or is that a
control-L?).

Also, is 2.21 the next version after 2.0? When I bought it was 1.0, then
they nicely shipped me 2.0 free without me having to ask for it. Then I thought
the current version was 2.2, and after being impressed with their upgrade
policy, it turned to disappointment when they didn't even bother to notify
me with an upgrade notice at least. That's assuming that they did put out
a version 2.20, which is what I'm trying to ask... I suppose I'll hafta send
in my 2.0 disk to get 2.21?

I have found through long-time use of these news.groups that some sites
do not handle the control-L's at all, thus the reader would be inadvertently
exposed to a "cheat-key" method he or she did not wish to know about to
begin with. Besides, I haven't actually been deluged with mail for this.

Version 2.2.1 is an upgrade from 2.0, definately. Whether or not it's the
next consecutive upgrade, I can't say (maybe someone else on the net upgrades
often enough to know?) I would assume that you received your 2.0 after
*recently* purchasing 1.0. There are instances where companies will do this
if they receive your registration card within a certain "grace-period" to
a new release - keeps the customers happy and you don't feel ripped off
purchasing what would then be considered obsolite.

As to notifying, I guess that's up to the companies themselves. Staying
tuned into this group usually helps. But I would much rather prefer a
company which charges me only a $3 shipping fee than one that notifies me
of an update that they will *sell* me for $28. For this, I applaud
Spectrum Holobyte (and I guess the parent company Sphere).

Just send your second disk along with $3 (US) to the address in your manual.
Mark on the envelope package FALCON MAC. Then just sit back and wait
expectantly by the mailbox like I did. :)
