About having to transfer Wizardry characters to Wizardry II; how are
the characters stored. Are they just a file? If they are then would
it not be simple to someone to transfer a bunch of beginner characters
from Wizardry and post it to comp.binaries so that people do not have
to buy Wizardry?

Actually, characters in Wiz can be stored in "Backup" files. Your
idea would be a good one if Wiz II could read these; however, it
will only read the characters from the Scenario file of the original
Wizardry. Those cheapskates really got all bases covered, no?

The characters are stored in a File, but you can't play Wizardry II with
just beginners. I have Wizardry II only for the Apple II, but I think you
needed level 13 or 12 characters for the transfer. Most of the fun in
playing Wizardry is between levels 1 and 14, since that's when it is most
difficult.

It's possible, but it will ruin Wizardry for those who would use the files.
A lot of personal effort goes into building a character. There are also a
lot of different ways to build characters. I personally like fighters that
have all mage and priest spells available. Lords are not bad either, but
they require a lot of points to advance from one level to another. Ninjas
are kind of fun, since they have some looting capability.

Maybe we should pressure the publisher of Wizardry to make a special deal
for those who accidentally bough Wizardry II without knowing that it
requires the first scenario. Robert Woodhead at least used to be on the
net, but I haven't seen him post in a long while. Robert Woodhead == Trebor.

That sounds like a good idea. Their phone # is 315-393-6633. I am not
connected with Sir-tech in any way now, except that I recieve royalties
from Wizardry products. While I started the Wizardry Mac project and
did the original port of Wiz I to the Mac, I did not do the conversion
of Wiz II, or the update (Terry Monks did them) and I had no control
over their content.

If the Wiz II box doesn't say "Needs chars from Wiz I" then that is a
major oversight on Sir-tech's part.

Characters in Wizardry are stored in the Scenario Files, but not easily.
You are advised to use only higher level characters in Wizardry II, the
Knight of Diamonds, because - well, just because you have to. [Can't
give too much away...I did the Mac port for the program.]

No comment on the "cheap-skates" thing, I did this under contract...The
original reason why you could not read from Backup files, was to make it
a little harder for players to fill their dungeons with virtual duplicates
of high level players, win the game, and then say that it was too easy.
