[comp.sys.mac.games] Mac Golf Games: Responses

moriarty@tc.fluke.COM (Jeff Meyer) (12/18/90)

Thanks to everyone who responded to my query of a good Mac golf game for the
Mac Plus/Mac SE/Mac Classic (i.e. small screen B&W Mac.) The overwhelming
opinion was that World Class Leaderboard, from Access Software, was the
superior B&W Mac golf game. A few people added that for color Golf games,
Jack Nicholas's Great 18 was the game of choice.

Much thanks. I'm giving WCL to Dad for Christmas, and in a stunning
reversal of the typical father-son relationship, I intend to play with *his*
new toy throughout the holidays! :-)

Here's the responses I got:

Jeff,

I have played both MacGolf and Jack Nicklaus' Great 18. One game to
add to your list that is *not* present is World Class Leaderboard
Golf. Both it (WCLB) and JNG18 are *far* superior (IMHO) to MacGolf.
I think the (color) graphics of JNG18 make it (personally) preferable to
WCLB, but since a Plus is only monochrome (as is my MacII at home) I
think WCLB is the better game. JNG18 has (optional) computer
opponents (which I think WCLB is lacking) - this might make JNG18
preferable. WCLB's crowds are more "free" with their applause (i.e.,
they clap when you hole out); whereas, the JNG18 crowd reserves their
applause for sub-par holes and iron shots within a few feet of the
stick. (However, if you *hit* the stick, they-re tight-lipped! As
Rodney Dangerfield would say, "rough crowd!")

I'm sure there's tons of stuff I've failed to mention - send me some
mail if there are some specific questions I can answer. I hope this
(sketchy) info helps.

P.S. And, in case it's not obvious, I have absolutely *no* vested
interest in *which* game you ultimately choose (i.e., I have no vendor
connections). I simply hope you get a game you'll (or I guess your
dad will) enjoy!

I am a satisfied user of World Class Leader Board (using an SE. I am unsure
of its ability to run on a plus). It's a fun game (and plays a lot like
the PGA tour for the IBM), and includes the course architect that
allows you to design your own courses. Thus there are a few new courses
out in the PD world, some of them very bizarre. This product was
well reviewed when released, but I don't know how good the support/
upgrades have been.

I've got World Class Leader Board and found it to be very good. From what I've
read, it tops any of those you suggested (except for Pro Tour Golf which is
only on IBM last I checked). WCLB has design your own course ability as well
as four predesigned. I understand that additional courses can be purchased.
While there is no slope to the fairways, trees, sand, water, and rough all
come into play. I have played it for some time and still have not mastered
it, though I'm getting pretty good (my handicap is about -1 or -2). I hope
this helps...

  I have tried MacGolf, Mean 18, and World Class LeaderBoard. By far (for
  a B&W Mac) World Class LeaderBoard outpaces them both. Mean 18 is a close
  second just for the fact that it does color.

  Here are some the features in WC LeaderBoard:

    * fast screen updates
   * Scorecard printouts
   * realistic digitized animation
   * Putting green/Driving range
   * Birds-eye view
   * design your own courses (with Course Architect [included])
   * 1 to 4 players

   made by: Access Software $25-$28

Just happened to read your message. I'm an old Mac Golf fan, and my brother
just lent me his copy of MacGolf Classic. In short, unless you have
access to a colour Mac, stick with the original Mac Golf. From what I've
heard it's the best and fastest (written in assembly code) of the golf
games for the Mac. I was excited (as anyone can be with a game), to see
what the "classic" Mac Golf was like, and was dissapointed. Basically
they just added colour plus a bunch of new courses which are virtually
impossible to shoot, which makes it frustrating. I ended up just going
back to the original MacGolf courses (which are included).
If you buy Mac Golf there is an inexpensive upgrade to the colour version
if you desire. The colour full screen version is great, but again the courses
suck. Mac Golf is a great game, and you'll be amazed at how well it's
engineered.

I noticed that you excluded World Class Leader Board.
I have that one and MacGolf. WCLB better than MacGolf.
Unfortunately, I haven't tried other ones you listed.
In any case, you might want to take a look at WCLB.

Just my 2 bits.

Dear Jeff,

Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18, while having really awesome holes, is very slow
on the MacPlus (It may be on others, too, but I haven't tried it), and the
graphics aren't very good on non-color machines. I would much prefer MacGolf
classic to play on a Plus, since it's faster, the graphics are better, and the
sounds are also better.

Again, thanks for the information and advice, and hope you enjoy your
holidays!

                            productive member of society. If you fail to do
                            so, I will pluck your eyes out and squash them
                            flat."
