Well, there is one that almost made me fail out of grad school. It is made
by Broderbund, the same folks that o Ancient Art of War and other wonderful
things. It is called Playmaker Football--aptly named because you draft your
own team, and diagram your own plays.

In the draft, you are given a full complement of thirty players--full offensive
and defensive squads, plus kicker and reserves (e.g. nickel back, fourth
wideout). You are given a pool of skill points to distribute among your
players. Each player can be given skill points in five categories: speed,
intelligence, agility, strength, and discipline. You might want to give
your halfback 100 points in each category (the maximum), but of course then
you have fewer points to give the rest of your team. Or you can create a
monster offensive line. Or maybe you want to build a team around defense,
etc.

You also diagram plays. You give each of the 11 players their own assignment:
pause, fake, execute one of five types of block, read the offense, then drop
into zone coverage, etc. Then you can test these plays on the field until
you perfect them.

There are two problems with the game. First, it takes a VERY long time to
create a team. Second, when you play against computer teams, it tends to
cheat. In other words, if you are ahead late in the game, and you call the
perfect defense that has been stopping his HB all day, his HB will suddenly
become un-tackleable, and you can only watch your players lying in the dirt
as he scampers into the end zone. The computer is beatable, however.

The best part is that you create your own team, and others create theirs,
and then you play against one another. You can even agree that at halftime
you each have ten minutes to go to the "locker room" and design a few plays
to combat what has gone on in the first half.

BTW, if you or anyone else happens to be in the DC area, and would be
interested in some friendly inter-personal playmaker competition, e-mail
me and let me know. Enjoy!
