On the LIRR, the M1 cars are fixed, with half of the seats facing forward and half facing backwards. Last time I rode NJ Transit from Hoboken, all the seats were reversible. I reversed the one in front of me because this weird guy was staring. About riding backwards on a plane, isn't there much more g-force on the take off than on landing? Being pushed against your seat belt for the ascent wouldn't be too pleasant. The LIRR is currently building an underground storage yard just west of Penn Station so they don't have to send all the rush hour trains back out to Babylon. (:-) Also, I don't know that much detail on the signalling, but I think there are at least warning bells in the cab for the Sunnyside Yard area, but these are probably just speed limits. Are there such things as emergency trips on the commuter railroads?
