[comp.sys.mac.games] PD/SW games for Compact Macs: Your Top Ten

gaynor@magnus.ircc.ohio-state.edu (Jim Gaynor) (03/21/91)

Having (finally) obtained a Macintosh SE/30 for my own use, I
now find myself in need of entertainment. <grin> Rather than wade
through ungodly numbers of ftp archives and CI$ file libraries, I
thought I would plumb the minds assembled herein for recommendations.

But, thought I, that's terribly mercenary. What can I offer
in return? There's already the Mac Games Summary - but that includes
commercial games, and makes no distinction between color games and
games that work on the compact Macs. But so many people have only
Compact Macs with 9" B/W screens. -And- limited funds. So, why not a
new list? So, announcing...

#The Compact Mac FreeWare-Shareware Games List#

Submit to me your personal top ten list of games that meet the
following requirements:

o Runs on a Compact Macintosh: Mac Plus, SE, SE/30, and Classic.
o Is either Freeware or Shareware.
o Can be obtained via anonymous ftp or from Compuserve.

(Maybe I'll add GEnie and America Online later, but right now this is
just me, and I only have Internet and CI$ access.)

I'll compile and process the lists, and create a canonical
list from there. Also, if you are the author of a game, feel free to
submit your own games to the list. However, don't just tell me about
your game - include it in a Top Ten list.

%Submission Format

Submit your list in the form of a "Top Ten" list, with 1 being
the highest possible rating.

Each entry on your list should include the following information:

o Name of game, and version number (if applicable)
o Which of the Compact Macs (Plus, SE, SE/30, Classic) the
game is -known- to work on (no guessing, please - just tell
	  me what you're certain of).
o Where the game is known to be available.
(addresses of ftp archives, Compuserve Libraries)
o Any other special requirements. (Memory, HD, System version, etc.)

%Processing%

o An entry's position on the canonical list will be determined
	  as follows:

For each time a game is entered in someone's Top Ten list, I
will subtract the position in the list (1 to 10, one being best) from
11, giving me a "score" from 10 to 1, with 10 being the best. Sum up
all the scores, and the game with the highest score will be at the top
of the canonical list, with others in descending order. Ties will be
listed alphabetically.

o If this becomes a regular thing, a new list will be
generated each month - the list will -not- be cumulative
from month to month, so that new games don't have to fight
for months and months to get the status of "established" games.

%Testing%

o I've got an SE/30, so I can test games on that. But,
especially if I get numerous submissions, I'll probably rely
	  on the submitters for testing.

Whew! Well, send your submissions to me at:

	gaynor@magnus.ircc.ohio-state.edu.

I'll summarize at the end of the month.
