Ah, yes. I was faced with the beholder, a medusa, and a large
number of two-hex monsters. (Manticores?) Your encounter should
be similar.

Save the game just outside the door.

1. Cast Prayer, bless, invisibility, protection from evil, fire
shield, etc etc before entering the room. The usual stuff.

Save the game.

2. Cast Haste. This will be very tough if your fighters do not
    get double attacks.

Save the game. Enter the room.

3. Kill the Medusa. Two fireballs should do it, if you have
two spell casters. As a side effect, many manticores will
be toast. Fireballs will have no effect on the beholder.
Nor will magic missles. Worse yet, as the beholder doesn't
cast spells, it can zap you even on turns it takes damage.

4. Move your fighters next to the Beholder. So what if you
take extra rear attacks as you move next to it. You're
    dead/disintigrated/paralysed/fearful if you don't.

5. Move your MU/Cleric around. Don't let one zap hit multiple
characters. Expecially avoid getting in front of a wall.

When I fought, the battle went something like this:
1. MU fireballed medusa.
3. Cleric used a fireball wand. Medusa RIP.
4. Three (hasted) fighters advanced on Beholder, and whapped it.
5. Thief (hasted) backstabbed Beholder. RIP.
Of course, I died about 5 times, before everything worked out...

Don't use the Dust of Dissapearance here. Save it for the
Beholder Convention.

This battle is the only time I've used Haste. The SSI games are just
like the 5&D battles I fought 13 years ago. (That is why I'm playing
with three fighters, a cleric, thief, and MU. Perhaps I'll get fancy
in Silver Blades, but so far this party has accomplished everything.)
Unfortunately, the Mac interface is intensely painful, especially after
Might & Magic II.
