[comp.sys.mac.games] On RoboSport by Maxis...

lorner@ecst.csuchico.edu (Lance Orner) (03/21/91)

Rob Jellinghaus (robertj@Autodesk.COM) asked what RoboSport was. Well...

Before we get started, I'd like to say that I don't have any connections
with Maxis, and I'm posting this 'press release' of sorts just because
I've liked their products and I feel like annoying the hell out of everybody
else will these long postings. :-)

Alright, everybody liked SimCity, we all thought SimEarth was pretty
impressive, so what's next? RoboSport! I've included a summary of the
game below which was written by Maxis. Maxis has said it plans a release
date of "late March," while there are a couple of rumors that say that
limited copies are already out.

What's next? SimCity II is in the serious rumor mode, and may be out in
a year or so. What is Will Wright working on now? A representative from
Maxis said "SimAnt" which simulates the entire colony and leadership of
an ant farm! (Say what?!) The posting and followups seem quite serious,
but I find it hard to believe. Only time will tell I suppose.

And onto the summary:

Subj: RoboSport: In the beginning... 91-03-07 19:39:18 ES
From: Maxis

Humans crave senseless violence and destruciton. They revel in
competition. They find pleasure in the planning and execution of
battles. They need war.

To allow Humans to remain true to their violent natures, and to
prevent them from destroying themselves, the planet, and ourselves,
we the Robots hereby institute RoboSport!

Set in a futuristic time in which robots do battle for the amusement
of humans, RoboSport is a battle simulation game that combines the
tactical challenge of chess with the intensity of urban guerilla
warfare.

You can program maneuvers for as many as four teams, of up to eight
robots each, simply by pointing and clicking on an icon instruction
set. Your robots can battle the computer's robot teams, programmed
to be crafty, defensive, ferocious, or stupid. Or, play against your
friends (who may demonstrate these same characteristics) on a single
computer, on two computers over a serial or modem link, or on up to
four computers over AppleTalk.

Experiment with over 2100 preset levels as you hunt for treasure,
rescue hostages, capture enemy flags, run a deadly gauntlet of bases,
or simply try to survive the withering assault of missles, grenades,
zap guns, time bombs, and kamikaze robots. Then customize your own
games for personalized creative destruction.

Robots battle in 24 arenas of three basic types: The manicured
streets of a suburb; the rubble of a devastated town; or a giant
computer motherboard. After each battle, you can replay the carnage
with VCR-type controls to analyze your (and your opponent's)
strategies. So plan your tactics, instruct your troops, and kick
Robutt!

Hardware compatibility: Macintosh Plus, SE, Classic, SE/30, LC, Mac
II, IIx, IIcx, IIsi, IIci, IIfx and Portable.

Monitors: Macintosh - monochrome, 16-color and compatible.

version.

Well, you are right, RoboSport isn't just coming out soon, it should be on
the selves any day and do BUY IT! You won't be sorry, believe me!
I must admit that I do have ties with Maxis (we've been testing for them and
their various products, including RoboSport (1 year) for about 2 or 2 and
a half years now, but trust me on this one. With a RoboSport purchase, you
can't go wrong. Especially with multiplayer games (up to four), the game
will be hard to beat. Let me know what you guys think of this game. If you
need any pointers, just drop me some Email!

On first look, the arenas seem a bit small. One other problem is too few
arena types (3--rubble, computer, urban). Looks to be a above average game.
