[net.railroad] LIRR signaling and left hand traffic in the US

First, to answer the question about the East River Tunnel signals, the
lower red signal simply indicates that the signaling system is working.
So green over red means proceed, red over red means stop - has nothing
to do with the aspect of the next signal. Coming into Penn Station
from Long Island city, the trains line up and follow one another in -
there is a single one light under the round position signals - when this
light is lit, that indicates stop and proceed (at 5MPH). The cab signals
(all LIRR trains have speed control) are speed indicators. At a stop
and proceeed inidcation, the cab signal shows 0 mph, the motorman must
acknowledge the speed indicator since he has exceeded the cab signal
speed. All equipment (diesels and MU cars must have speed control on
the LIRR).

Running left hand - C & NW, because of they were originally financed by
English investors in the 19th century. Also the Kansas City Southern,
call the Haywire, because it runs haywire - left hand traffic.

Finally, speed calculations - just time the train between mileposts.
I won't insult a group of computer people by supplying a formula.
