[comp.sys.mac.games] OIDS problem

kanderso@liege.ICS.UCI.EDU (Kenneth Anderson) (04/06/91)

Any other OIDS owners out there notice that the keyboard appears to get
stuck, or even worse, not respond when a key is pressed. For instance,
there are times when I have died because I press the space bar for the
shields to come on, and nothing happens, no shield and WHAM the missle kills
me! I can't figure this out, because I will transfer over to a word processor
start typing and everytime I press the spacebar (like magic) I get a space!
So its not my keyboard, but the game OIDS itself, I think. I'm not going
to start pointing a finger at OIDS unless I here that other OIDS owners are
having the same problem...

Another really annoying thing besides not having shields work consistently is
sometimes, keys appear to get stuck, so for instance I'll press the key to make
my ship rotate left, I'll then tap the key for thrust, and then find that both
keys have stuck and thus I go careening (whilst spinning left) into a wall!

Very frustrating! Besides that I love the game, I'm just curious if anyone else
has encountered this behavior in OIDS even though their keyboards are well
behaved otherwise....

Thanks in advance,

Ken

I have a friend with OIDS, and while we were playing it, the same thing
happened to us. I quickly figured out (well...mostly remembered from the
warning) that if you use the shift key as one of your controls, Easy Access
will turn on and lock keys down. If you hit the <shift> key 5 times
consecutively, Easy Access activates. Then any key you hit 2 times in a row
will "lock". Personally I hate Easy Access, and haven't used it since I
figured out what it was. If you've cheked into this, then I have no idea
what's wrong, 'cause once we deactivated E.A., no more problems were to be had.

I have had Oids now for several months, have played it heavily, and have had
no such problems.
