Get your driving gloves on people. Vette is about to make it's appearance. No longer vaporware, it should be out any day now. The graphics I've seen look very nice...vector--like Hard driving. There's even a race head to head option (through modem, or direct connect). I'm not sure if the one I saw was a final beta or release, but it looked very nice. ins_apw@jhunix.HCF.JHU.EDU Philip Wong (301) 235-3998

I got a copy a few days ago from Spectrum Holobyte and, well, it's BRILLIANT! :-) It has typical Louie/SH touches too, including the moans as you run people over (gosh, ANOTHER nun in the way? :-) and various other weird and amusing things. Drive past Davies Center in downtown SF, for example, and it says "MACWORLD" on the side. (you can't get to the Moscone, as SoMo is one of the undefined areas of the city: they didn't have space for all of SF, alas). Drive up to the Carol Dodo sign and sure enough, her left nipple flashes erratically. Drive down Lombard and, well, it's awful twisty. Use the helicopter view while driving through the Broadway tunnel, and, well, you don't have too much headroom... There are things that one learns playing this game too; for example, I now know that it's really hard to drive across the Bay Bridge at 250 mph unless you can remove the traffic beforehand. (on the other hand, a good strategy for medium traffic levels is to drive on the *wrong side of the road*, swerving around oncoming vehicles. Kids, don't try THAT at home! :-) I also found out that there's a street called MacExchange near, well, I leave it to intrepid Vette! explorers to find it... I'll be writing up a review for Digital Games Review in a few days, but my summary comment is; if you like The Duel and/or Hard Driving, then you're going to flip over this game. If you know San Francisco, it's even more fun. The game has book-based copy protection which isn't too intrusive, gorgeous graphics (includes color and B&W versions), some pretty nifty audio, and some very witty graphics. The list of excuses when a cop pulls you over are great too... but I don't think I'll try them on a real cop. Btw, another rule of thumb; don't try to push police cars off the Golden Gate Bridge if you're not in Trainee mode... They don't seem to like it very much... :-) -- Dave Taylor Intuitive Systems Mountain View, California taylor@limbo.intuitive.com or {uunet!}{decwrl, apple}!limbo!taylor

Do any of you hot Vette! drivers out there use the mouse to steer? I found that my chances were better using the joystick. What about joysticks? Any secret steering strategies?!? -- Robert S. Unoki unokirs@mentor.cc.purdue.edu (standard disclaimer, please)

Before I begin my criticism of this game, I would like to first thank the users on the net for recommending games that are extremely good. I picked up Armor Alley on the recommendation of the Net, and although I'm having problems resuming saved games, it is amazing. Wayne Gretzky Hockey, as I posted a long time ago, was pretty much a bust. I have also found many good PD/SW games that I never would have heard of without you guys. Now: I heard a lot of great things about Vette!, and I have been looking for a good driving simulation (and a good hockey simulation) for a long time now. I admit that the graphics are OK, and the concept is fun, but I can't for the life of me see why anyone would play this game for more than a day or so. As a result, I am returning the game tomorrow to get my $45 back from Egghead or trade it in for a really GOOD game. Which brings us to our next point: What is REALLY good, no bugs, preferably sports-oriented or war-oriented, that I should get as a replacement? I've heard a lot about Harpoon, but I don't like the fact that people have mentioned bugs and that you have to keep buying battlesets. One game I have gotten recently and I think is really good (if you like golf) is Jack Nicklaus' Greatest Holes of Major Championship Golf. I've enjoyed it immensely and will keep going back to it (and maybe even buy other courses). I do, as a rule, trust the net's opinion on these things, and I want to get a REALLY GOOD GAME! Please help. Also, please answer this even if it is after Friday. I may not get to return Vette! until Monday. The Duel by Accolade is a real killer game, and if you like RPGs check out some of Strategic Simulations Games. If you really like games, though, I'd buy a you know what. -Terminator-P.S. I'm looking for a good game too. Help me!
