[net.railroad] Mixed train on the Red Line

rees@apollo.uucp (Jim Rees) (02/03/86)

I saw something pretty unusual on the MBTA Red Line last night. It was a
four car train consisting of two new ("silver") cars in the lead and two
old ("blue") cars on the tail. The train was in service, but passengers
were only allowed on the lead (silver) cars.

This is such a rare sight (I've never seen it before) that I always assumed
it was impossible, either because the couplings or the controls or both
are incompatible. Indeed, only the doors in the lead cars opened on this run.

Also, they are demolishing the tile walls on the Park Street Red Line platform.
I now have a section of the old wall that I pried off. Makes a nice souvenir.
