I have been playing Might and Magic for a while, and have made some
progress (described in spoilers below).  At this point there are a
couple of puzzles that I think I should have been able to solve by
now.  They are 

(spoilers ahead: nature of unsolved puzzles) 
  - getting past the bronze door in the caves under Portsmith

  - the access code for the door(s) in the caves under Erliquin

I have gotten past both doors using sorcery (the teleport spell).  I
suspect that I am missing nothing by doing this with the bronze door
but that I am missing the point entirely by not entering the access
code.  I believe I have mapped every hex in both towns and in both
caves.

Can anyone suggest something I might try?  In particular, I believe I
need to find a bronze key and a clue that gives me the access code.
Am I on a wild goose chase here (e.g. giving the access code gives
you some gold or gems but nothing that really helps you with other
puzzles)?  Thanks in advance for your help.

The rest of this message gives an idea of what I have done so far in
the game.

(Spoilers ahead) 

So far my party has explored all of the towns and almost all of the
surface.  The exceptions are most of A1 and the enclosed area with
dinosaurs in E1, both of which are still a little too tough.  Castle
of Doom is also too tough for them.  They can survive for a while in
Castle Alamar but have to be very careful.  (They have made it in to
see the lord there.)  The other castles (White Wolf, both Blackridges,
White Wolf, and Dragadune) have been fully explored, as have all of
the towns.  All of the caves have been fully explored except for the
dungeon under Dragadune and the dungeon under the Perilous Peaks.  The
upper levels there are okay but go too far down and my party dies
horribly.  My party has gotten to the astral plane but has found it to
be very dangerous.  (Dying can be so boring and repetitive!:-)

In terms of quests, my party has destroyed the pirate ghost ship and
defeated the warrior's stronghold (minotaur) but can't win against the
wizard Okrim and his friends or Lord Raven... yet :-).  They've
collected and used silver, coral, and diamond keys.  They have a gold
key and a key card.  They found a statue of a white and sable dog near
the minotaur's maze.  They were told that they had solved a major
quest and to remember BJ.  I am that the reference to BJ is to the
cavern where you have to set the dials so you can get the key card,
but the part about the major quest is a mystery to me.  I think I know
the pieces to the Luck Island puzzle, but haven't gone around killing
all the beasts.  I also think I know what I have to do to be found
worthy, except if I am right I won't be able to complete that puzzle
until I can successfully navigate Castle Doom.  My party has found the
secret of Portsmith, but hasn't been able to defeat the queen and her
friends.  My party also dies to the demons under Portsmith.

As for hints in the game, I have figured out what the gold messages
are about, but have no idea of what to do with the silver messages.  I
also have a collection of cryptic messages like "I be me!" and
"ICU2ME3" that are, well, cryptic :-).

Anyway, my theory is that all the bronze key does is get you past the
bronze door under Portsmith, which I can accomplish anyway.  Judging
by the relative easiness of the puzzles and critters in and around
Erliquin, the access code to the door should be relatively easy to get
too.  (Well, the town guard is pretty tough but my party can handle
them.)  Have I missed something obvious?  Should I just be patient?
