[comp.sys.mac.games] HardBall II

Has anyone played this game yet? I have the original Hardball and thought it
was a pretty decent arcade game. I hear that the new version is more
simulation oriented. Any reviews?

I bought this about a week ago. Not too much time to look at it yet, but
it's basically a pretty decent simulation and arcade game.

For the simulation side, you can pick the computer to play both teams. It
will then use all the statistics for batting, pitching, etc.

For the arcade side, you can control a team - hitting, fielder placement,
etc. I'm not positive, but I would guess that the players' statistics
come into play here, as well. You may swing and hit the ball, but I imagine
the batting average determines how many times it will fall in for a hit.
But it is somewhat fun! And they have some teams set up for pure arcade
style play (try the sandlot swingers -- they all bat 1000, and run like the
wind!).

It's a fairly good Mac port of the IBM version (which I used to have). On
my IIcx the speed is excellent, with only a slightly-noticeable lag when
it switches display screens. The players' animation is great - little
running figures, complete with shadows!

The controls are keyboard based, and take a bit of getting used to. For
instance, to throw the ball, hold down a base (home=2, etc) AND the return
key at the same time. But once you figure them out, they are easy to use.

The sound is OK - the national anthem is played at the start of the game,
and the bat makes a "crack" sound when hitting the ball. The crowd cheer,
however, is somewhat short -- it's almost like it gets cut off just as
it's getting going.

Hardball II seems very Mac "happy." It runs in 16 wonderful colors on the
cx, and hasn't crashed yet. It runs fine under Multifinder, and the
interface is good. It also uses the entire display screen.

Overall, it's a good simulation/arcade sports simulation. It's one of the
best I've tried on the Mac.
