[comp.sys.mac.games] Pool of Radiance question

kanderso@liege.ICS.UCI.EDU (Kenneth Anderson) (02/19/91)

My apologies to the net if this has been asked before...but here goes.
I am having a wierd problem with two of my clerics. I have one character who
is a cleric/magicuser 5th level in each, who has enough experience to advance
to be a sixth level cleric. However when I try to train him, I get the message
not enough experience. He currently has 30659 which is greater than the 27501
that is required to be a sixth level cleric. He is a half-elf. Is there
a limit on how high a half-elf can advance as a cleric?

Next character. The next character is a human sixth level cleric. He has
65894 experience points which is greater than the 55,001 that is required to
be a seventh level cleric. However, when I try to train him, I get the same
message as before, Not enough experience. Is Pool of Radiance trying to tell
me that my characters are getting too strong, and that I can't advance any
further in this scenerio?

Just wondering,

Ken Anderson

P.S. Please send me a response through email, and I will post to the net a
     summary, if interest warrants. Thanks.

"Is there a limit on how high a half-elf can advance as a cleric?"
Yes, and I do believe it's 5th level. I was also confused by this with my
cleric/fighter - but the max levels *are* in the manual.

"human sixth level cleric. He has 65894 experience points which is
greater than the 55,001 that is required to be a seventh level cleric."
There is also a limit to how much training you can get in POR. Phlan's
still a bit of a backwater, you see... These extra points can be used to
advance further in Curse of the Azure Bonds, however. Note that if you can
advance 2 levels at once, both programs advance you one level, but cut
your XP's to (number needed for next level -1). So you have to go kill a
kobold or something to get that next level. :(

Note: To beat the POR scenario really only requires characters of the max
level you're allowed.

I won PoR without even the highest level...
all my chars were 5th...

Are character levels limited to the maximums described in the manual (e.g. 6th level magic-user) or is there another training grounds somewhere with higher level NPC's? If not, why do they bother with telling you the level restrictions based on character race?

Thanks for your time.
