[comp.sys.mac.games] What is a *.cpt file?

chetc@uop.uop.edu (sonic_the_hedgehog) (05/25/91)

Sorry if this has been brought up, but what exactly is a *.cpt file?
I believe I read somewhere that the .cpt extension refers to a program
known as Compacter. I've looked around mac.archive.umich.edu in
the mac/utilities/compressionapps, but I can't seem to find it. Does
anybody know where it is at umich, or at another ftp site? Any help
would be appreciated.

Again, my apologies if this has been brought up before...

Later...

Hi folks.... .cpt is the extension for files created with Compact PRO
(the new name for Compactor.. the version we have is 1.3.. if there's
a more recent one, would somebody please place it into the "incoming"
folder on mac.archive?)

an extraction program is available for .cpt files from
utilities/compressionapps/extractor1.20.hqx (or some filename
VERY close to that...)

keep sending questions and new programs our direction....

You're correct. .cpt are Compactor files. You need Extractor or Compactor to
get them out. Extractor is a free utility capable of 'uncompressing' both
Compactor and Stuffit files. I've been using it for some time now and it's
pretty straight forward to use.
The only problem I've had is that Gatekeeper doesn't like it (surprise surprise)
but them again Gatekeeper doesn't like a lot of things including Macintalk so
I don't think it's a big deal.
You should be able to get extractor from most ftp sites, probably under
utilities or some such directory.
