I've owned a Seagate drive for about 19 months. In December of 1988, I bought a ST-277N drive. I built a "homebrew" drive. It workd fine for about three weeks, then the drive would not start up when turned on. I called HDI (I bought it from them) and they replaced the drive in like a week or so. This second drive lasted through January of this year. It started doing the same things- no spin up, grinding noises .... I called Seagate and told them (not in the nicest way I know) that for the price I paid for one of their drives, I should be getting more than one year out of them. They fixed it -- I had to ship it to Florida via the expensive shippers, they fixed it in "28 days" (6 weeks) and I paid $210. One person told me it was $230 or so, but the other charged me the $210 (better). Once I got the rebuilt drive, I reassembled it, and been _extremely_ careful with it. I did not abuse the old mechanisms in _any_ way; they just didn't last. This rebuilt mechanism has a different bearing on it than it used to. I heard the grease in the drives' bearings may become gummy, and if the drive is off for a while, the grease cools and sticks. I've had no problems with my rebuilt unit; I let run all the time. I do know I'll never buy another Seagate drive again. Brent Burton n138ct@tamuts.tamu.edu BPB9204@TAMSTAR.BITNET

> > Does somenone know which problems st- 138 n Hard Disks have ? > > Sometimes when I turn on my mac the hard disk doesn't come ? High humidity seems to be one condition which causes this for me. I'm ready to trash the drive and get a good one, but it's the boss's, and he's too cheap to do that, so he's figured that if he puts the SE on its face (screen down) and turns the machine on, that'll get it going _almost_ every time. And yes, I have full backups. :-) --Adam-- -- Adam Frix via cmhGate - Net 226 fido<=>uucp gateway Col, OH UUCP: ...!osu-cis!n8emr!cmhgate!200.2!Adam.Frix INET: Adam.Frix@p2.f200.n226.z1.FIDONET.ORG

>> Does somenone know which problems st- 138 n Hard Disks have ? > I'm ready to trash the drive and get a good one I haven't heard too much praise for Seagates. Would it be better to buy a quantum than to try and get my Seagate repaired? It would be $210 to fix, but maybe this is throwing good money after bad. I need a 40-80 mb drive. Peter D.
