[comp.sys.mac.system] Interesting Behavior When Moving Files...

spencer@osc.edu (Stephen N. Spencer) (07/26/90)

[Hardware: Mac Plus, 2.5Meg, 20MB hard drive, System 6.0.2 or 6.0.3]

I've noticed something interesting when copying files between the hard drive
and a floppy, and am curious as to this behavior.

Normally, when a file is copied from one disk to another, the usual status
box with the little indicator showing how much of the file(s) has been copied
and how much is left.

The interesting behavior, and this is an occasional occurrence, not all the
time, is that that status 'bar' will immediately and completely fill, from the
start of copying the file, and the area directly to the left of the end of
the bar is also filled, though not immediately.

          -------------------------------------------------------
          |XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX |
          -------------------------------------------------------

Normal status bar about halfway through.

          -------------------------------------------------------
      XXXX|XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX|
          -------------------------------------------------------

Abnormal status bar perhaps halfway through
                 to completely finished.

Is this normal? Disinfectant (thanks, John Norstad! I love the About... box!)
doesn't show anything unusual.

I've also seen this behavior on another Mac, a IIx here at work.

I saw the same behaviour when running System 6.0.4 on an SE30, but when I went
back to system 6.0.3 it cleared up. As far as I can remember, that was the
only change that I made, so I too would like to hear theories about this.

Here's my guess at the cause.

Occasionally, you might notice in a Finder list view window that a file is
listed as smaller than it really is. This often happens when downloading a
file with a terminal emulator. (I guess the Finder notices the new file and
remembers its initial size and doesn't update it.) You can get the Finder
to update the size by selecting the file and choosing Get Info.

I think that if you try to copy a file like this, then you get the stange
behavior in the status dialog. I guess that the Finder computes the mapping
between bytes copied and percent done based on what it thinks the size is,
and things go wrong when the file ends up being larger than it expected.

When I first saw this I thought it was kind of amusing, and I didn't realize
what caused this until someone explained this theory.

How about if you close the window it is in, then reopen?

I've noticed the same thing, too, running 6.0.3 on a IIcx. It doesn't happen
all the time, but it does happen quite frequently.
