[comp.sys.mac.system] Background Printing

chma@iceman.jcu.oz (Michael Antolovich) (08/01/90)

OK, now that MultiFinder has been sorted out, here's the next question :-)
Is there a background print spooler that will not complain that
it can't find a printer, and will start spooling as soon as one comes
back on line ?
We have a clever system of mixed IBM and Macs connected to one
LaserWriter. The Macs are AppleTalked, but the IBMs use the serial
connection. So when the IBMs use the printer, Macs don't see it and Print
Monitor sits in the corner and flashes its little icon. I want something
that will quietly sit there and check for a printer (a little nicer than
PM, ie doesn't lock up the Mac for a full 10 seconds !!) and send the docs
when it's ready. It would also be nice if the thing didn't take so much
noticable cpu time while sending data to the the printer.
Oh yes, a statemant on whether your suggestion is PD, Shareware
or (more likely) Commercial (also sources please) would be appreciated.
						Thanks again,
						Michael.

PS I know that IBMs can get AppleTalk cards, but no one is willing to
do this (ie networking veryone together is out) They are considering
getting a dedicated printer for the IBMs and leaving us alone, but till
    then....

PSS This may or may not be the second posting, so accept the usual excuses :-)
