When running new developmental software, the probability of
crashes is essentially 1.0 given a "scout's honor" programming
environment.  On my Unix workstation I can run broken software
with intent of fixing it while I have the source up in other windows,
tentative changes in others, and reading mail in yet another,
and compiles going in the background
with the knowledge that I'm not going to lose any work just
because the buggy program gets brainfried. 

You would never dream of trying that on the current Macintosh...
