I know Motorola announced the 68040 sometime late last year. Does anyone know if that chip is in full production yet, or when Apple plans to introduce into the Mac market. The reason I ask is. I am getting ready to by a Mac IIcx but knowing that the 68040 incorporates the 68030 along with the math co-processor makes me a little nervous, because it would be incredibly fast.(Probably blow away an fx) It might make my almost new mac obsolete. Any info, thoughts, or opinions would be appreciated. THANX.. John Cavanaugh Email to: ingrjpc@sonne.cso.uiuc.edu [Internet] or cavanah@uiucvmd [Bitnet]

In the latest Microprocessor Report (great newsletter, too expensive for me, a college undergrad), their news section contains a couple of paragraphs on the '040. A spokesman from Motorola said they had a new mask for the '040 which is supposed to fix (most?) known bugs. Production quantities are supposed to be availbale by year end. HP and Next were said to be ready to ship machines as soon as they could get chips - maybe I was reading too much into the article. Nothing about whether Moto's claims for the '040 are true or not... There's also an article about the evolution of Intel CPU's and their flaws and advantages. Johnny Lee t-jlee@microsoft.UUCP Standard Disclaimer
