[net.railroad] Whither SPSF?

dps@omssw2.UUCP (Dave Schneider) (08/07/86)

Does anyone know what's going on in the wake of the ICC disapproval of the
SPSF merger? Some specific questions are:

Is SPSF (parent corp) filing an appeal? To what authority?

What is happening to the projects that were based on assum-
ing the merger would succeed: painting programs, extra
        connections, etc?

Can SP recieve any compensation for its loss of non-rail
property to SPSF (parent corp)? I think it was kind of ra-
pacious to transfer title before the merger was approved.
(Can you tell I have stronger feelings for SP than for
        ATSF?)

Anyone care to speculate on who else might try to pick up SP's pieces? My
silly idea is to have DRGW and SP join, but then I might have trouble put-
ting DRGW together with either MKT or KCS, who could use some leverage
against the big boys. Yes, I know, MKT is looking to become part of UP to
escape the problem. But there's not much romance in that.

One news item that I have heard is that SP is now painting their
units back into the traditional red and gray and that ATSF will paint their
most recent rebuilds into solid yellow with blue or black numbers.
The reasoning for Santa Fe is twofold:
   (1) If they finally do get the merger approved, they can finish the solid
yellow units with red & black to finish the merger scheme.
   (2) Santa Fe is just waiting for their new buckets of blue paint to arrive
	from their paint suppliers..
If units do come out in solid yellow, It will be interesting to see how the
lettering is applied on the hood. (i.e. a big Santa Fe spelled out, just a
little discreet SF on the side of the hood or what...)

SP has at least one SD45T-2 rebuild in the 6700 class in red and gray
running around. Another question to pose is whether SP will put the
oscillating mars lights (or those hokey oscitrol simulated mars lights) back
on their units....

Railfanning in the West should be exciting in the next few months with
all the paint schemes running around on the Santa Fe & SP. Get your shots now
of the red premerger engines!!
