[comp.sys.mac.system] Strange Finder Behavior - Help!

bhatlas@pyrite.som.cwru.edu (Sunil Bhatla) (08/18/90)

Since a week ago, I have noticed that everytime I switch from one
application or DA layer to another, or to the finder layer, the finder
quits and relaunches immediately! All finder windows and icons vanish
and then reappear in a couple of seconds as it relaunches. This
behavior is systematic and easily replicated.

I traced all recent init additions, increased the system heap size,
but without any success. This happens even on removing ALL inits.

What's going on? This is a Mac IIx, 6.0.4, 5 Mb RAM, running
multifinder.

Thanks!

Sunil.

Sounds like you may have an INIT conflict. Disable several of the "questionable"
ones, restart, and see if the problem persists. You might want to up the
Finder's memory allocation (click on the Finder, and Get Info to set the
application's memory size). If neither of these options help, boot from a
System Tools disk, trash your current System & Finder, and install "fresh"
copies. You'd be amazed at the weird things that happen when the System file
(or an application, for that matter) gets partially trashed...

Some time ago, we had similar problems. It turned out that our Macs were
infected by the WDEF virus. Remedy: rebuild the Desktop (restart while
pressing Command+Option).

Hope this helps.
