*reposted to the net 190990 (origionally posted to comp.sys.mac.misc) We have a problem relating to backing up mac's at our site. Situation: ~500 mac's, models ranging + to IIfx, disks 20Mb to 650Mb. Mixed Ethernet and Phonenet. Multiple Appleshare servers/Quickmail(tm) etc Our desired backup medium are Exabyte helical scan 2.4Gb tape units, of which we have a number spare at this time. These are ex-Vax backup units. We are in the process of evaluating 2 software packages Retrospect and Netstream. Problems. firstly netstream, although the version we are evaluating supports helical scan units, it fails to do other than image backup on our later units. This package seems very straight forward, and keeps track of files on tape rather than in disk form. secondly Retrospect, the only concern here is that the catalog file needs to be stored on a seperate disk or server. My evaluation of both packages falls somewhat short of exhaustive !! and I am in no way condemning either product because of that fact. Background in mind, the questions are simple. 1. Are there Exabytes and Exabytes, do ROM revisions play a BIG role ? 2. Am I overlooking options or upgrades to the mentioned packages that fix the problems I've related..? 3. If not, can anyone suggest a TAME backup package that does mac and mac-server backup's over the net as well as individually to helical scan type drives ? 4. <The question I forgot to ask but you think you should answer here :-) > Please mail replies to an address below, and I'll post a NEWS summary. Which is a good idea because if you do an incremental backup, you don't want
to read the whole archive from tape...
incidentally, Retrospect does store the catalog information on the tape, too;
there's a special command to restore a catalog from the archive
("Recatalog").
