[comp.sys.mac.system] Iici B/W Wierdness

folta@tove.cs.umd.edu (Wayne Folta) (09/25/90)

I just tried to put out IIci into 1-bit mode, to speed up a program that we
just got. Doing so causes strange things to happen on the screen:

   1) The font that is used to display folder names "blocks up". That is,
seemingly more black pixels are turned on, resulting in letters
      that become blobs.
   2) "Snow" appears on the screen.

The first problem seems to go away when I go to 4-bit color, but the second
remains. Both problems disappear in 4-bit gray or better, and 16-bit color
and better.

This problem is new, since I used to change from color to b/w quite frequently.
I tried running with all INITs disabled, but still had the same problems.

Can anyone help me on this one?

Wow - I can't say I ever had this happen to me. May want to try booting from floppy, delete your old System file, and re-install it. If that doesn't help, I might suspect your video hardware.

I'm having some trouble myself - the left half of my screen looks slightly darker than the right half. I'm using a Sony 1304 monitor - I hooked up my Mac to another Sony monitor and got the same thing. Do Sonys just have the left side of the screen darker than the other? I also bought two different cables from two different stores - and I still have the problem with either of them. I don't know what's going on, but I'm taking my machine in for a checkup.
