[comp.sys.mac.system] System 6.05

ph1c+@andrew.cmu.edu (Peter Nikitas Handrinos) (07/12/90)

Does anyone know of any problems with 6.0.5 and the mouse. We just
installed 6.0.5 and the mouse starts to move errantly across the screen.
A couple of machines have experienced this, SE's and SE/30's. Any
ideas?

One possible problem: VIRUS!
One of the (less common) Mac viruses will do just that...

Get Disinfectant 2.0 from someone and check the machine...

A known conflict with System 6.0.5 is the A+ ADB mouse. If you are using
this alternate ADB device, you will experience a 'jerky' cursor. Last I
heard, A+ was working on fixing this, but I don't recall whether they'd
resolved the problem or not.

Other 3rd-party ADB devices may have similar problems due to some changes
Apple made in the ADB drivers (for compat. with the IIfx). Check with
your manufacturer to be sure...

  Hope this helps...

Say what? My 1987 A+ mouse ADB works just fine on a Mac II. What machines are
affected?

Kensington recommends that all ADB Macs running 6.0.5 install an INIT on
their machines which is supposed to guarantee that their ADB Turbo mouse
will work. They don't say that you will always have problems, just that
you may have problems. There are pretty significant changes with the ADB
Manager in 6.0.5. This INIT was posted to binaries awhile ago. It can be
obtained from Kensington or probably be reposted.

I'm curious as to Apple Computer's instructions to its dealers regarding System
6.0.5. I'm told by one of the local dealers in New York City that the upgrade
must be purchased and may not be copied off them. Is this true? Of course,
they're selling it at $49.95, which is much more expensive than the $35 that
APDA charges. And the APDA versions don't have user documentation either.

Is this true? I have gone to my local "certified" apple dealer and he
copied them for me FREE right before my very eyes and customers too.
Didn't seem like this was illegal. Either your getting shafted, or I
am getting a GREAT deal! (BTW: I gave him my original system disks to
copy over.) What gives?

Could someone tell me what's so special with System 6.05?

I'm forced to upgrade my MacPlus to 6.05 because HC 2.0 don't work
with any older System.

After using System 6.05 for about two weeks, I find it slow (updating windows
for exemple) and I'm also asking myself why I have so many mysterious crashes
since the upgrade.

So... Does anybody know what's in System 6.05 that HC 2.0 can't live without?

or... What is the difference between 6.04 and 6.05?

Yes, two things. TextEdit 3.0 and Sound Manager fixes. HC 2.0 uses
TextEdit, the Macintosh OS text editing facility for its handling of text
in fields, etc. TE 3.0 provides full Script Manager compatability which
means that HC 2.0 can now handle multi-lingual text in its fields. Also,
there were changes/fixes made to the Sound Manager which HC needs...
