For all of you who want the Desktop Manager but can't find it... Surprise! It's on apple.com! And you thought Apple didn't want to distribute it. But there's a catch--It's hidden. Oscar, Apple's appletalk pre-system-7 file transfer utility required the Desktop Manager, so it's bundled in there. The whole package is in the hacks directory, probably pub/dts/mac/hacks. Something like that; you'll find it. If you're still using 6.0.2 you should get the DM_Fix from sumex that modifies the finder to allow you to unmount hard drives. Following Finders work fine with it, previous ones not at all. Note that the Desktop Manager does not change how the Finder deals with floppies--but the 'Updating Desktop file' message will flash by in only microseconds when copying files on hard drives. I was able to reconsolidate my partitions with no penalty in time for doing so (yah! No 20megs distributed 5megs here, 5 there...). Enjoy! Mark Lanett

There's been mention that the Desktop Manager is available for ftp from apple.com. We aren't directly on the internet and have to send mail messages to an ftp server. It's hard to find things if you don't know where they are. Please respond with either: o the full pathname of the file containing the Desktop Manager o or, the name of a directory of the apple.com ftp files Thanks -- Kevin A.
