[comp.sys.mac.system] System 6.0.7 and IIci = Crashes

sharp@cs-sun-fsa.cpsc.ucalgary.ca (Maurice Sharp) (10/18/90)

I installed system 6.0.7 on my ci a last night. Since then, I
have had lots (20+) of crashes. That is compared to almost no crashes
since putting up 6.0.5 over a month ago. Yes it could be some of the
INITs I have, but after going back to 0.5 I could not recreate any of
the crashes that occured before.

If I were you, I would think twice about putting 0.7 onto a ci !

I've had 6.0.7 on my IIci (with 2 rows of INITs) for over a week now
with no adverse side effects. I guess it depends what software and
inits you use.

I had crashes just after installing 6.0.7 on my ci, but then remembered
to increase finder MF allocation, printmonitor MF allocation, and heap.
All is better now.

For what it's worth, I've been working on a IIci (along with four other
people who are all) using 6.0.7, with various inits. Sounds like you're
going to have to do some init disabling to figure out what is the problem.
Also check and make sure that you're using the LATEST versions of all of
your inits and your applications. Good luck (I know it's frustrating!).

Hiya,

Thanks for the comment, but I had also upped the finder allocation
and the system heap size (I do not use Print Monitor).

I've noticed many complaints of crashes with recent (and not so) sytem
versions. I've had similiar probs. w/ my FX & 6.0.5 The obvious reasons
are init conflict that have to be tracked down in a trial & error method.
I think we all agree this is rather foolish. The ques. is, will 7.0
have any acknowledgement of these probs. and somehow try to incorporate
an init manager?

No, but if you are tracking things down by trial and error it's made a bit
easier. If you hold down all the modifier keys during the boot, the system
automatically disables ALL INITs, and says "Extensions Disabled" on the
Welcome to Macintosh screen.

That way, if you have crashes on boot, you can at least boot up without a
spare startup disk.
