[comp.sys.mac.system] Palatino font?

schabtac@spot.Colorado.EDU (SCHABTACH ADAM) (11/02/90)

I just got System 6.0.7. and have installed it on my IIci (so far no crashes,
BTW). I'm curious about something I found in the "6.0.7 Developer DRAFT"
notice, under the section "Installer Script":

"Palatino 10, 12, 18, 24 get installed when doing an install from System
Software on 1.44mb media. This now means that the target install from an
1.44mb installer will NOT be the same as the "same" install from an 800k
System Disk install."

And indeed, there is no Palatino font to be found on the 800K disks. Now, I like
the way Palatino looks (I have an old file with 10 and 12 point sizes) and
the large sizes would allow me to print it nicely on my ImageWriter II. Could
some kind person mail me a copy of the full Palatino family? Or direct me to
an FTP site where I can find it?

And, to anyone at Apple, WHY exactly does this difference exist? If I'm
installing my software on an 80MB drive, I can certainly afford the space to
accomodate the font. What possible difference should the kind of media I'm
installing from make?

Thanks in advance!

Adam,

The Palatino font is copyrighted, commercial font package from Adobe. It is
Package #1, and lists for around $170. You will find this is the same with
most other brands of type, such as cassidy &green, etc.

Sending the font, unless it is the Apple TrueType Font format, would be
piracy for the person who sends it, and you.

If you just want the bit map version, you can go to your local print shop,
and purchase a mac-user disk, set up for use with their system, and may be
able to obtain it for a nominal fee.

Just thought I would let you know, nop intention to point fingers, etc...

Aesthetics is not the only reason to want Palatino. I just got a copy
of HC2.0, and with the version of 6.0.7 from apple.com installed via
800K floppies, there's no palatino...and every time HC2.0 starts up,
it complains about not having Palatino 24 point. Where is it?

Well, I just checked, and many Adobe screen fonts, Palatino included, are
available on sumex-aim.

For those who may be unfamiliar with how to get there...

Now, about the HyperCard problem...

Open the script of the Home stack. Examine this script:

on startUp
  -- Requires handler: getHomeInfo,checkForMissingFonts
-- gets and sets the user's preferences
  getHomeInfo
checkForMissingFonts -- inform user of missing fonts
pass startUp -- so others can use it
end startUp

If one comments out that "checkForMissingFonts" call, HyperCard will no longer
complain about any missing bitmaps. I run ATM, and got real tired real fast
of HyperCard telling me that my screen was going to look crappy because I was
missing the 24-point Palatino bitmap.

Later in the home stack script, you will find the script for the
"checkForMissingFonts" handler, so you could, if you wish, just edit out the
references to Palatino in that handler.

The PostScript Palatino font is copyrighted and commercial. Just about
the only reason anyone would want this anyway would be for something
like ATM or Freedom of Press, since it is built in to most (all?)
LaserWriters and many other PostScript printers.

The person is clearly asking for the bitmapped font, however, if you
read the message more carefully:

And, as other people have pointed out, this is not only available at a
local dealer, but Adobe has allowed sumex-aim to make the font available
for (free) FTPing there.

Please try to avoid piracy complaints, especially when they are not true.

I was not trying to post a piracy complaint, when not true. As I mentioned,
the postscript files are copyrighted, and the bit mapped version can be goten
from a local print shop, etc.

I was not aware, as I do not use pay-while-on-line services that these were
available. To that, I apologize, but, again, I was pointing toward the ENTIRE
font package....

Funny how Apple doesn't bother checking for ATM before complaining
that such-and-so font size is missing... :-)
