[comp.sys.mac.system] Looking for author of Init/CDEV

lemke@radius.com (Steve Lemke) (11/09/90)

If anyone knows how to contact John Rotenstein electronically, please let
me know. I have INIT/CDEV 3.0, and all he lists is his postal address in
Double Bay, Australia. In case this message might make it to him, I'll
describe my issue below:

We have discovered a bug in INIT/CDEV with a two-monitor Mac system, where
the two displays are different sizes. If the boot screen is different from
the main screen (basically in the control panel the menubar is on one screen,
say the larger one, and the happy mac (hold down the option key) is on the
other (smaller) screen, then when you boot up the system, if you hold the
spacebar down, a menubar the size of the smaller screen will be drawn across
the top of the larger screen.

This is purely a cosmetic bug, since any other init that redraws the screen
will draw the proper menubar, and/or the Finder will fix it when it starts
up. The technical explanation is this: INIT/CDEV calls InitWindows but NOT
InitGraf. INIT/CDEV should either (A) call InitGraf before InitWindows, or
when building it's own A5 world, it should be sure to use the MainDevice and
NOT the BootScreen.

This bug was discovered on a Mac IIci with 8mb of RAM running 6.0.7.
However, it will probably occur on just about any other multi-display Mac II,
and I would imagine it would still happen with 6.0.5.

If anyone can forward this to John and/or let me know how to contact him
electronically, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
