[comp.sys.mac.system] Putting Icon next to About the XXX

gt0831c@prism.gatech.EDU (William Moss) (11/15/90)

I would like to use ResEdit to put an applications icon next
to each Applications ABOUT menu item.

For the most part, I know how to do this.
I am using ResEdit 2.0b2 or (when v 2 seems to crash a lot) 1.3d1.
Bring up the menu resource in its default editor.
Choose an ICON that has an id between 257 and 511.
Save the application.
Return to the Finder.

All is fine. The icons look great in all applications that I do this.

PROBLEM: In Multfinder the icons dont work.
The finder icon looks like a generic hand icon.
Other applications either take on the Finder/System icon (small mac)
or they are complete garbage.

Does anyone have a clue what is going wrong.
IMHO this would mentally make the Multitasking switch between
applications much easier. (The little icon in the bottom of the menu
bar grows to a big icon at the top when it is the foreground app).

. . . _ _ _ . . .

I believe there is a document which says that
multifinder promises to not support the use of
icons in this menu. It says not to do what
you want to do.

In Tech Note #180, it says:
] Applications should avoid doing anything untoward with the Apple menu. For
] example, if your application puts an icon next to the "About MyApplication"
] item, MultiFinder may unceremoniously write over it.
