[comp.sys.mac.system] Flaky SE/30...please help

jlc@atux01.UUCP (Jim Collymore) (12/05/90)

am running on a mac SE/30, system 6.0.5, with 5Mb of RAM. I am having a
lot of system lock-ups when trying to print under MultiFinder. During some
investigating, I found two strange files: Desktop DB & Desktop DF. Do I
need those files, or should I get rid of them? What are they there for?

ALso, assuming that all is well with my chooser, what could be causing these
printing problems?

Please e-mail your responses to me.

Thanks.

Well, Let's start off with the easy parts.

Desktop DB & DF: These are (correct me if I'm wrong) new desktops created by Apple Desktop Manager in place of the ordinary Desktop File. Apparently, Desktop Manager keeps these files open fulltime, avoiding the occasional (slow) write to the desktop file. Originally used for servers, etc, DM works well for most if not all macs.

Printing under Multifinder: Yes, I have had this same problem. Can't tell you what it was, but it was a pain. Incidentally, what MF were you running? I WAS running MF 6.0.5, but I'm now running 6.1b9. Anyhow, my solution was to use Installer and re-install the whole thing. This worked for me.

Are you running Desktop Manager INIT? If so, those are your "real"
desktop. If not, you're safe to nuke them.

Jim> What are they there for?

They are DM's version of the "Desktop" file.

Make sure the applications you're having problems printing from have
some extra space in their MultiFinder allotments. You might also
replace the printer driver, just to make sure it's not corrupted.

Oh, and make sure you have some disk space left. Some programs want to
use temporary files when they print.
